Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most from hauliers, freight forwarders and exporters using UK transit. Still stuck? Call or email — we reply quickly.

What is a T1 transit declaration?

A T1 is a customs document submitted via the New Computerised Transit System (NCTS) that allows non-Union goods to move between customs territories under the Common Transit Convention without paying duties or VAT at each border. Once accepted by NCTS the system issues a Master Reference Number (MRN) and prints the Transit Accompanying Document (TAD) that travels with the goods.

How long does it take to issue a T1?

From a complete file we target 30 to 60 minutes during UK working hours and a few hours overnight. A complete file means commercial invoice, packing list, GB EORI numbers for consignor and consignee, HS codes (4–8 digit minimum), gross/net weights, route, expected start time and any seal numbers.

What is the difference between a T1 and a T2?

T1 is for non-Union (external transit) goods moving under duty and VAT suspension. T2 is for Union-status goods that need to keep their Union status while passing through a non-EU country. UK-origin goods exported to the EU through a non-EU country use T2; non-Union goods being carried under duty suspension use T1.

Do I need a transit guarantee?

Yes. Every T1 movement must be backed by a transit guarantee — a Comprehensive Guarantee (CCG), a TC31 individual cash guarantee or a TC33 individual voucher guarantee. We hold our own CCG so most movements are covered without action by you.

What is an MRN and how is it tracked?

The Master Reference Number (MRN) is the 18-character identifier issued by NCTS when a T1 declaration is accepted. It is the reference for every status update, message and discharge action. We track the MRN actively until the office of destination confirms discharge of the movement.

Which countries use the Common Transit Convention?

All EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, North Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine and the United Kingdom. Goods can move between any two CTC parties under a single T1 without re-declaration at each internal border.

What is a Transit Accompanying Document (TAD)?

The TAD is the printable document NCTS produces once a T1 declaration is accepted. It carries the MRN as a barcode, lists the consignment details and travels physically with the goods so customs offices along the route can identify the movement.

What information do you need from the consignor?

Company name and address, GB EORI number, contact for customs queries, and confirmation of who is acting as Principal on the movement (typically the consignor or their authorised representative). For repeat clients we hold this on file once and re-use it per movement.

Can a T1 cover groupage / multiple consignments?

Yes — a single T1 can cover multiple consignments on one vehicle provided they share the same office of departure and destination. Groupage T1s need the underlying consignment data structured carefully; we routinely build these for forwarder customers.

Can I get service in Turkish?

Yes — bilingual EN/TR support is one of the reasons this service exists. A significant share of UK ↔ Turkey transit movements is handled by Turkish-speaking shippers, drivers and dispatchers. Documents, declarations and status updates can be issued in either language.

Are you a customs broker or a software platform?

We are a customs team, not a self-service portal. You don't log in and click buttons — you send the file and we lodge the declaration, manage the guarantee, track the MRN and resolve any query. That is intentionally slower to scale than a SaaS but it is what hauliers and exporters actually need at the gate.

How is your pricing structured?

All T1 work is quoted per movement based on route, guarantee value and volume. We do not publish a price list because every consignment is different — for an accurate quote, send the basic details (route, value, expected volume) via the contact form and we reply within one working hour.

How do I get started?

Send a short outline of your route, expected volume and timing through the contact form, by email or by phone. We reply within one working hour with a quote and the next steps. There is no portal to sign up to, no long contract, and no setup fee for ad-hoc movements.

Still have a question?

If your question isn't answered here, contact the customs team directly. We reply within one working hour during office time, and within a few hours overnight.
